Australia is a long way between good days.
Which reef boat goes to the outer ribbons. Whether the penguins are worth the drive. What a day on the Great Ocean Road really costs. Every tour in Australia, reviewed.
The six days Australia is known for.
The reef, the harbour, the rock, the wine valleys, the animals and the coast road. Most trips are built around a handful of these, and the operator you pick changes the day more than the destination does.
The most popular tours in Australia.
Every review →More travellers take these than anything else on the continent, and each one earns the day for a different reason.

The Great Barrier Reef: it comes down to the boat.
All reef trips →
The reef is 2,300 km long, so the question is never whether to go — it is which stretch, from which town, on what size vessel. Big catamarans run to moored pontoons with everything laid on. Small boats go further out to the ribbon reefs with fewer people in the water.

Outer reef pontoons from Cairns
A fast catamaran out to a moored platform on the outer reef, with snorkel gear, a glass-bottom boat and a buffet included. The easiest first reef day, and the one that suits non-swimmers.
Sydney makes you get out on the water.
The city works as a harbour first and a city second. Ferries are public transport, the best walk in town runs along a cliff to Bondi, and half the good days out start at a wharf rather than a bus stop.
What a day out costs in Australia.
The whole catalogue by price, because the gap between a good cheap day out and an expensive one is smaller here than the brochures suggest.
City walks, harbour ferries, winery afternoons, zoo and park entry — the everyday half-days.
The standard full day: coast road runs, wine tours with lunch, wildlife parks, most whale seasons.
Melbourne spends its best days out of town.
The laneways take an afternoon. The rest of the week belongs to the coast road, the penguins at Phillip Island and the Yarra Valley an hour up the freeway — which is why nearly every Melbourne tour on this site leaves the city.
Three things you can only do in Australia.
Beaches and wine you can find on any continent. An island of quokkas, a beach of penguins at dusk and the largest sand island on earth belong to this one.

The Quokka Island
Rottnest allows almost no private cars, so the island runs on bikes, a shuttle bus and your own legs. The quokkas are the reason most people come: small, unbothered marsupials that thrive here and almost nowhere else. They will walk right up to you, and the law is clear that you look and never touch or feed them.

The Penguin Parade
At sunset on Summerland Beach the world’s smallest penguins come ashore in rafts and cross the sand to their burrows. It happens every night of the year, on nature’s clock rather than the timetable, so winter means an early finish and summer a late one. Cameras are banned on the beach and the ban is enforced.

K’gari, the Sand Island
K’gari, long written as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island on earth and there is not a paved road on it. Everything runs on 4WD: the perched freshwater of Lake McKenzie, the Champagne Pools, the rusting Maheno on Seventy-Five Mile Beach — a stretch that serves as both the highway and the airstrip. The dingoes here are wild, and the rules about them are not decoration.

In Australia the season picks the day out, not you.
Humpbacks head north up both coasts from May and come back south with calves until November. Stinger season closes tropical beaches from November to May, when reef boats hand out suits instead of arguing. The Red Centre is a winter destination — go in January and the heat decides your itinerary for you.
Book these before you fly to Australia.
Most of Australia can be booked from a hostel bunk the night before. These cannot: they run on fixed rosters, one showing a night, and boats that hold forty people.
- 01BridgeClimb SydneyEvery climb is a booked slot on a fixed roster with a named list at the gate. Dawn and sunset groups go first.
- 02Penguin Parade, & Wildlife Encounters Eco Tour from MelbourneThe parade happens once a night, at dusk, and the closer viewing tiers are ticketed separately and separately capped.
- 03Opera House Guided Tour with Entrance TicketTours run in the gaps between rehearsals and performances, so the day’s slots are fixed, dated and few.
- 04Ocean Rafting: Whitehaven Beach, Snorkelling & Hill Inlet LookoutThe boats to Whitehaven carry a few dozen people each and the summer sailings fill well before the season starts.
